WinMute Review - What is WinMute and How Does it Work?
WinMute is an open-source program that will mute the system audio when you lock your computer or a screensaver starts. It's a very useful application for those who work in crowded offices, as they can avoid bothering people around them with music or notifications whenever they step away from their PCs.
The program's installer will place a simple icon in the system tray, from where you can right click to access its configuration menu. From there, you can choose to disable or enable the automatic mute triggers that you can set up. If you want, you can also specify that the program should instantly restore the volume once your computer is unlocked or the screen saver ends.
This is a very lightweight app that will run quietly in the background. Once you've configured the triggers that you want, it will only take up a small amount of memory and CPU power. It will also minimize to the system tray, so it won't get in the way of other programs that are running on your computer.
You can download this utility from the Microsoft Store, but it's not exactly the most exciting place to find new software. You're much better off checking out the many apps over on Github, where the developers are bringing real innovation to the Windows platform. You can use the application to mute your computer's microphone, camera, or both. You can also select the position in which you want to display the Microphone On, Camera Off toolbar when toggled (default: top right corner of the main monitor). The options are pretty extensive, making this one of the most complete tools of its kind.
